Domestic Violence Awareness Month

With all the hustle going on in our studio as we prepare for the holiday months to come, we are constantly taking time to center ourselves on our social mission -- to empower women in Detroit. The women that come through our doors are brilliantly optimistic about their futures, but circumstances in life tend to try to remind them of their lowest points. This month has been recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness month, and we are reminded of the shocking correlations between cases of homelessness and domestic abuse for both men and women.

Up to 55% of women in shelters have cited domestic violence as the immediate cause of their housing insecurity. Additionally, 80% homeless mothers have experienced a form of domestic abuse in their lives (2016). The impact of domestic violence on women's psychological state, financial security, emotional and physical well-being can be long-lasting and difficult to overcome. Women in this position often find themselves taking one step forward and two steps back in their journey to self-sufficient life.

In an effort to continue to support the women in our community who have experienced domestic violence and abuse, we have partnered once again with Coalition on Temporary Shelter. During the month of October, we will be donating 10% of all sales to their domestic violence program, New Beginnings. This program provides support and temporary housing for survivors of domestic violence. Join us in supporting this cause that impacts so many.
